Our Undergraduate IB Program ranked in Top 20 for 6th consecutive year

Initially established in 2000, the International Business program quickly rose in national prominence, breaking into the Top 20 with the 2004 US News & World Report rankings. Since then the program has expanded in enrollment, with 164 students currently enrolled in the program. In eight years the program has experienced more than 6-fold growth.

Epsilon Eta Pi (EEP) - Newly Established IB Honor Society
The International Business Institute proudly announces the formation of a chapter of the Epsilon Eta Pi (EEP) Honor Society at UMSL. EEP was established at Florida International University, a fellow founding member of the Consortium for Undergraduate International Business Education (CUIBE). The UMSL chapter inducted its first members in spring of 2008 and celebrated its first Honor Society graduates, Heather Nichols and James Heckman, at the commencement ceremonies this year.

UMSL Students Experience Japanese Business and Culture
In May, 2008, Dr. Allan Bird and Professor Elizabeth Eckelkamp accompanied nineteen students on a study tour of Japan. For two weeks they experienced a fascinating blend of the traditional and the modern - a cultural exploration combined with a study of a vibrant economy.

IB fellows, Professor Michael Harris, Professor Gerald Gao, Professor Mary Lacity, and Professor Janet Y. Murray received College of Business Administration Faculty Awards.

UMSL Sponsors WAI B Networking Reception
Dr. Janet Y. Murray, Vice President of the Women in the Academy of International Business (WAIB) and E. Desmond Lee Professor for Developing Women Leaders and Entrepreneurs in International Business and Professor of Marketing, at the UMSL hosted this year's WAIB networking reception for members in Milan, Italy at the Academy of International Business (AIB) 2008 annual conference.

Advisory Board Member Spotlight: BENJAMIN H. HULSEY
Benjamin H. Hulsey has been named the newest member of the International Business Advisory Board in the College of Business Administration at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Hulsey is a partner in the division of corporate and securities practice group at Thompson Coburn LLP.

IB Graduate Research Assistant Awarded a Des Lee Scholarship
Svetlana Krasteva, IB Graduate Research Assistant pursuing a Master of Science (M.S.) in MIS degree, has been awarded a 2009 Des Lee Scholarship. The Des Lee Scholarship Program is designed to encourage, in perpetuity, talented students to pursue studies in areas that are supported through the Des Lee Collaborative Vision (DLCV) organization.

IB? stands for International Business Bond and is the new internet- based networking platform for international business students, alumni, faculty, and business partners of the International Business Institute at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Unexpected Benefit of Internship Program
The 2008 International MBA graduates arrived on campus at UMSL in August of 2007 in anticipation of completing the second year of a specialized dual Masters Degree program. This is the second graduating class of students who have received a Masters Degree from their home universities, where they attended the first year of this two-year program, and an International MBA from UMSL. One of the highlights of this program is the opportunity for each student to participate in an internship placement the summer after they complete their classroom studies. For the second year, UMSL was able to place interns at some of St. Louis' premier international companies including Anheuser Busch, Peabody Coal, Emerson Motor Technologies, Silgan Plastics, Scottrade and Solutia, among others.

IB Majors find success At Midwest Model European Union Competition
From April 17-19, 2008, seventeen International Business Students accompanied Professors Elizabeth Vining and Joyce Mushaben to the Midwest Model European Union, one of only a half-dozen events of its kind in the United States. Founded and hosted by Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) since 1993, the EU-Midwest provides hands-on simulation for students from universities around the country, helping them to learn about the workings of the European Union.

Advisory Board Member Spotlight: Michael J. Hackett
Michael J. Hackett has been named co-chair of the International Business Advisory Board in the College of Business Administration at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Hackett, 42, is president of Hackett Security Inc., an installation and monitoring alarm system business.

Award-Winning Faculty Best Symposium Panelist Award
For the second consecutive year, the Management Education Division of the Academy of Management recognized Dr. Allan Bird and Dr. Norihito Furuya as Best Symposium panelists. The Global Forum Best Symposium award is given each year to the panel that best addresses issues of management education in a global context.

Technologico de Monterrey: Our Newest IMBA Partner School

The College of Business Administration signed its sixth International MBA partner institution: Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM). The agreement will focus primarily on the Puebla and Morelio campuses, two campus in the southern zone of national network of 33 campuses.

Des Lee Makes a Difference at UMSL
Des Lee turned 90 in August, 2007 and has given away a fortune in his lifetime. He has already contributed roughly $50 million dollars, and he has with plans on giving away another $1 million each year for the rest of his life. "I'm in the business of making a difference in the community. I'm a collaborator. I bring people together." Which is exactly what he did through the Des Lee Collaborative Vision (DLCV).

Dr. Shankarmahesh Spends a Semester at Park Golbal
During the 2007 Fall Semester, Dr. Mahesh N. Shankarmahesh was in India teaching graduate students of Park Global Business School where he is Honorary Director. Besides teaching the Global Business Environment course to 19 graduate business students in India, Mahesh also taught International Marketing to undergraduate students at UMSL through the Internet-based Wimba system from India, waking up at 4:00 am twice a week!

Research with Real World Applications
Harnessing the IT capabilities of a global network of suppliers is a challenge for many international firms. Recently, two UMSL faculty members published the results of an extensive, on-going research project aimed at helping practitioners meet this challenge. Dr. Mary C. Lacity and Dr. Joseph W. Rottman have interviewed over 230 people engaged in the offshore outsourcing of information technology development. Their results offer real solutions and guidelines for companies looking to manage an ever increasing demand for IT services. Their research detals concrete examples of how to successfully engage offshore suppliers an ensure quality, manage cost and protect intellectural property.

International Business Leadership Council Member Spotlight: Stephen J. Burrows
Stephen (Steve) J. Burrows has been with Anheuser-Busch for 28 years and is currently the chief executive officer and president of Asia Pacific Operations for Anheuser-Busch International, Inc., the international beer subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. He is a member of the strategy committee for the parent company; a board member of Anheuser-Busch International, Inc.; and serves on the boards of a number of Anheuser-Busch International subsidiaries.

Meet one of our International Business Majors: Heather Nichols
Heather Christine Nichols was born in Madison, Wisconsin and moved to St Louis three and a half years agao to play volleyball with the UMSL intercollegiate team. She grew up in a little town outside of Madison with her two older sisters, younger brother and mom an dad.
