International Business Concentration (Major) Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Degree
The world is moving away from an economic system in which national markets are distinct, isolated entities towards a system in which national markets are becoming increasingly integrated. The study of international business focuses on understanding the forces behind this globalization of markets and production as well as the constraints on its attainment. While opportunities for export and foreign direct investment are much greater than ever before, international business professionals are faced with an operating environment that, because of its cultural diversity and dispersion, is very complex. The international manager must be able to apply basic business concepts to this diverse global marketplace. The international marketplace requires a manager to have a solid foundation in finance, marketing, accounting, logistics, and management as well as the ability to adapt these fundamental concepts to unique situations.
Curriculum
Students studying International Business at UM-St. Louis will receive a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in International Business. The program builds upon a strong liberal arts foundation and a comprehensive core of business courses. Because the International Business student must be able to understand how these core concepts are applied at the global level, she/he must take at least four international business courses. In addition, students are required to have a foreign language proficiency equivalent to thirteen hours in one foreign language of international commerce. Transfer students wishing to waive the thirteen hour foreign language requirement must pass the UM-St. Louis foreign language proficiency exam. Languages of international commerce are determined by the College of Business
Administration. Students are encouraged to spend at least one semester in an exchange program offered through the University and approved by the College of Business Administration.
Faculty
Because International Business is interdisciplinary, faculty is drawn from all emphasis areas. Our diverse faculty, including fifty doctorally qualified, full-time members, has degrees from more than thirty different Ph.D. degree granting institutions. In addition, the College of Business has four endowed professors; one in China Studies, one in Japanese Studies, one in Developing Women Leaders and Entrepreneurs in International Business, and one in Information Systems. This allows the student the opportunity to discover more about the world from eminent scholars.
International Study and Internships
The global marketplace demands business leaders with direct foreign exposure, intercultural skills, and a substantial background in international affairs. These skills are best developed when the student is able to live and work in a foreign country. Students pursuing an international emphasis are encouraged to spend at least one semester studying and working in an exchange program offered through the University and approved by the College of Business Administration.
Twelve (12) hours are required of all individuals seeking an emphasis in International Business
